What is Popoia Island?

Popoia Island — also known as Flat Island — is a small, flat islet just offshore from Kailua Beach Park. It's a protected seabird sanctuary and offers excellent snorkeling around its rocky edges. Unlike the more distant Mokulua Islands, Popoia is an easier paddle (about 20–30 minutes) making it perfect for families, beginners, or anyone who wants the island experience with less paddling.

How does this compare to the Mokulua Islands tour?

Popoia is closer to shore (0.4 miles vs 1.5 miles to the Mokes), flatter, and less crowded. If you're looking for a more relaxed paddle with great snorkeling, choose Popoia. If you want the iconic Mokulua Islands experience with tide pools and a summit hike, choose the Mokes. Many guests actually do both on different days!

Do I need kayaking experience?

No experience needed! Popoia Island is our most beginner-friendly guided tour. The paddle is short and protected inside Kailua Bay's barrier reef. Our guides provide thorough instruction and stay with the group the entire time.

Will we see wildlife?

Yes! Popoia is a nesting site for wedge-tailed shearwaters, and the surrounding waters are a regular feeding ground for Hawaiian green sea turtles (honu). Depending on the season, you may also spot spotted eagle rays, reef fish, and humpback whales in the distance (December–April).

What happens if conditions are bad?

Safety is our top priority. If wind or swell conditions aren't suitable, we'll reschedule at no charge or provide a full refund. Kailua Bay is protected by a barrier reef, so cancellations are rare — but your guide will always make the safe call.
