What are the Mokulua Islands?

The Mokulua Islands — Moku Nui (Big Island) and Moku Iki (Little Island) — are two iconic islets off the coast of Kailua. Moku Nui is the accessible one: you can land, hike to the summit, explore tide pools, and snorkel. Moku Iki is a fully protected seabird sanctuary and landing is prohibited. Together they're one of the most photographed landmarks in Hawaii.

How difficult is the paddle?

The paddle to Moku Nui is about 1.5 miles each way across open water inside Kailua Bay. It typically takes 45–60 minutes depending on wind conditions. This is a moderate paddle — you don't need extensive experience, but you should be in reasonable physical condition and comfortable in the water. Our guides adjust the pace to the group.

What's on the island?

Moku Nui has a sandy landing beach, a hiking trail to the summit (steep but short — about 10 minutes), Queen's Bath (a natural ocean-fed tide pool on the south side), and tide pools along the rocky shoreline. The views from the summit are breathtaking — you can see all of Kailua Bay, Lanikai, the Ko'olau Mountains, and on clear days, Molokai in the distance.

Will we see turtles?

Almost certainly! Hawaiian green sea turtles (honu) are abundant in Kailua Bay and frequently surface near kayaks. The seagrass beds between Kailua Beach and the Mokuluas are a major feeding ground. We also commonly see spotted eagle rays, reef fish, and seabirds including wedge-tailed shearwaters.

What if I've never kayaked before?

While this tour is rated moderate, many first-timers complete it successfully. The key is being in reasonable shape and listening to your guide's instruction. If you're nervous, we recommend booking a morning tour when winds are lightest and the water is glassy. Or consider our Popoia Island tour — a shorter paddle that's better suited for absolute beginners.

What happens if conditions are unsafe?

Safety is our top priority. Your guide assesses conditions the morning of your tour. If trade winds are above safe limits or if a swell advisory is active, we'll offer to reschedule or provide a full refund. Kailua Bay is generally very paddle-friendly, but we never compromise on safety.
